A PRESCHOOL THAT CARES ABOUT THE EARTH AND YOUR HEALTH

We believe a non-toxic classroom is essential in today’s world, where children are exposed to more environmental chemicals and sensory stimulation than ever before, often during the most sensitive periods of growth and development. Young children are uniquely vulnerable due to their rapidly developing organs and nervous systems, higher breathing rates relative to body size, and natural tendency to explore their environment through touch, movement, and taste. Research shows that common chemicals found in everyday items, such as furniture, toys, finishes, and cleaning products, can contribute to cumulative exposure over time and have been associated with respiratory irritation, endocrine disruption, and impacts on attention, behavior, and learning.

Because many of these exposures are unregulated, poorly disclosed, or not studied in combination, we take a precautionary, evidence-informed approach. Our commitment to clean consumerism means that every product, material, and system in our space is thoughtfully selected to support healthy development, clean indoor air and drinking water, and long-term environmental responsibility. This includes prioritizing non-toxic materials, minimizing sensory overload, and choosing durable, transparent, and responsibly sourced products. By reducing unnecessary chemical and sensory burdens, we aim to create a calm, nourishing environment where children’s bodies and minds can develop as naturally and resiliently as intended.

ENVIRONMENTAL PRACTICES AND STANDARDS:

Material & Chemical Safety

Material & Chemical Safety

Material & Chemical Safety

  • VOC-free paints, finishes, adhesives, and art materials

  • No added formaldehyde, PFAS, PVC or vinyl, phthalates, BPA or BPS, or toxic dyes

  • Materials meet fire safety requirements without added chemical flame retardants

  • Heavy-metal safe materials and finishes, including lead-safe surfaces and components

  • Avoidance of antimicrobial chemical treatments, nano-coatings, and unnecessary chemical additives

  • No added synthetic fragrances or masking scents in materials or finishes

  • Low-emission inks, coatings, and adhesives used throughout the classroom

  • Plastics limited and used intentionally

  • Verified through third-party certifications, (e.g. GREENGUARD Gold®, OEKO-TEX® Standard 100, GOTS organic cotton, CertiPUR-US®, CPSIA compliance, and CARB Phase 2 wood standards)

Furniture & Textiles

Material & Chemical Safety

Material & Chemical Safety

  • Solid wood or FSC-certified furniture preferred over particleboard

  • Furniture and textiles meet fire safety requirements without added chemical flame retardants

  • Natural fiber rugs and bedding used in place of foam-based materials to reduce off-gassing

  • Organic or natural textiles, such as 100% pure cotton, wool, and linen

  • Foam avoided whenever possible. When required, it meets CertiPUR-US® standards for emissions and content

  • Non-toxic, water-based finishes used in place of petroleum-based coatings

  • Textiles laundered with fragrance-free, non-toxic detergents

  • All furniture is verified through third-party certifications, (e.g. GREENGUARD Gold®, OEKO-TEX® Standard 100, GOTS organic cotton, CertiPUR-US®, CPSIA compliance, and CARB Phase 2 wood standards)

Air Quality & Ventilation

Material & Chemical Safety

Air Quality & Ventilation

  • HEPA air purification units for particulate filtration

  • Regular maintenance and replacement of air filters

  • Natural ventilation and fresh air flow prioritized, with windows opened when weather and outdoor air quality allow

  • Outdoor air quality monitored, with ventilation practices adjusted during wildfire smoke or poor air quality events

  • Radon testing and ongoing monitoring

  • No synthetic fragrances, aerosols, incense, or scented cleaning products

  • Live plants used as a supplemental support for indoor air quality, alongside mechanical filtration and ventilation

  • Humidity awareness and mold-prevention practices

  • No ozone-producing air purifiers or ionizing devices

Cleaning & Sanitation

Lighting, Tech & EMF Consideration

Air Quality & Ventilation
